Men want to look more youthful, attractive and confident, and they are increasingly accepting cosmetic surgery to remove aging signs, like a droopy neck or excess fat.
Men represent a small percentage of total cosmetic procedures done, yet a total of 1.1 million men underwent cosmetic procedures in 2010, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. That’s 2% increase from the year before. The most desirable procedures are face-lifts, eyelid surgeries, nose reshaping, and liposuction.
Most appealing to men are the improved techniques for plastic surgery, writes the Wall Street Journal. Recovery from many minimally invasive procedures is swift and doesn’t require a hospital stay. Surgeons explain that men “don’t like the idea of taking lots of time for an elective procedure.”
For men, motives for undergoing aesthetic plastic surgery are not to just look and feel better, although more men are doing plastic procedures after divorce to help them get back on the dating track. The biggest reason for men is that their enhanced looks give them confidence, especially older men who are in a competitive youth-dominated work environment.
Younger men are increasingly considering plastic surgery to get a more masculine appearance with breast implants or breast reduction. Nearly 75% of 18,000 men who did breast procedures were between 13 and 19 years of age.
Men are also becoming more open about plastic surgery, unlike few years ago when they would come in the back door to avoid being seen, writes the WSJ.
