A new technique using high-intensity focused ultrasound can eliminate excess abdominal fat reducing waist circumference, and can become an alternative for liposuction for patients who are not obese but desire a sexier and fitter body.
The body sculpting technique is noninvasive with minor pain and side effects, reports a study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
The researches worked with 180 patients who wanted treatment to remove the unwanted fat. The average age for the patients who applied to the high-intensity focused ultrasound technique was 42 years, with 85% of the patients being women.
The patients were divided into three groups. One group underwent high-intensity ultrasound treatment, the second group of patients were under low-energy treatment, and the third group was under “inactive treatment” with no ultrasound treatment. After twelve weeks, the results were compared.
“The results supported the effectiveness of high-intensity ultrasound in reducing abdominal fat – especially at the higher energy level. Among patients who actually underwent their assigned treatment, waist size decreased by an average of 2.5 centimeters (one inch) in the high-energy ultrasound group, compared to the control group,” explains the study.
Interestingly, the high-intensive ultrasound procedure takes less than 50 minutes to perform, meaning it can replace liposuction for patients who want noninvasive modest reduction in waist circumference.
